The official Rwanda guidance confirms that visitors receive a briefing before tracking and that gorilla groups are allocated according to fitness considerations and trekking protocols.

How Long Does Gorilla Trekking Take?

Volcanoes gorilla trekking can take anywhere from roughly 30 minutes to more than four hours to reach a gorilla family, depending on its location and movements. The total excursion can therefore occupy much of the morning or longer.

• We always advise travellers to prepare for a full outdoor experience.
• Do not plan an important flight immediately after trekking.
• Do not assume your trek will finish at a fixed time.
• And do not judge the experience by distance alone.

At altitudes reaching approximately 2,500–4,000 metres, steep terrain can make even a relatively short trek physically demanding.

Volcanoes National Park Gorilla Permit Cost

The standard Rwanda gorilla trekking permit currently costs US$1,500 per person per day for international visitors. Rwanda also offers different rates for eligible Rwandan, East African Community and other resident categories, subject to current terms.

How Many People Can Visit a Gorilla Family?

Rwanda limits standard gorilla trekking groups to eight visitors per gorilla family per day, helping keep encounters controlled and reducing pressure on the animals.

How Close Can You Get to the Gorillas?

Wear sturdy hiking boots, long trousers, long sleeves, waterproof clothing and protective gloves for a Volcanoes gorilla trek. Gaiters are useful because forest trails can be wet, muddy and covered with vegetation.

You should have reasonable fitness for gorilla trekking because Volcanoes trails can involve steep climbs, muddy ground, dense vegetation and high-altitude hiking. However, trekking difficulty varies significantly between gorilla families.

We do not recommend training only by walking on flat roads.

Instead, prepare with:
