12-Day Uganda Big-Game, Gorilla & Primate Safari

We begin our Uganda safari in Entebbe with a relaxed stay beside Lake Victoria, giving you time to recover from your journey before flying into Uganda’s remote wilderness.

Our representative welcomes you at Entebbe International Airport and transfers you to your accommodation.

The first day is intentionally unhurried.

After a long international journey, we give you time to settle in and adjust to Uganda’s warm tropical atmosphere.

Depending on your arrival time, you can relax at the lodge or explore the surrounding area.

Lake Victoria provides a peaceful setting for your first evening in Uganda. You can enjoy the views, take a quiet walk, or simply rest before the safari begins.

We also use this time to brief you about the days ahead.

Tomorrow, we leave the shores of Lake Victoria and fly north toward one of Uganda’s most remote wildlife destinations.

We recommend keeping your first day light. A relaxed arrival helps you begin the safari refreshed and ready for the wilderness.

We fly from Entebbe to Kidepo Valley National Park and begin exploring its open savannah, where lions, buffalo, elephants, giraffes, and other wildlife roam across a dramatic landscape.

After breakfast, we transfer to the airstrip for our scheduled light aircraft flight to Kidepo Valley National Park.

The flight saves significant road time and takes us directly into one of Uganda’s most remote safari regions.

As we approach Kidepo, the landscape opens into vast plains surrounded by rugged mountains.

After settling into our lodge, we begin our first game drive.

Kidepo offers a distinctly different safari experience from Uganda’s western parks.

Its expansive valleys provide broad views across the savannah, while wildlife moves between grasslands, seasonal water sources, and wooded areas.

We search for lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, zebras, antelope, and other wildlife.

Predator sightings depend on animal movements and current conditions, so we allow our guide to determine where to explore.

The afternoon provides our first opportunity to settle into Kidepo’s rhythm.

We return to the lodge in the evening and enjoy our first night surrounded by the sounds of the wilderness.

Our Tip

Kidepo is remote and its conditions can vary. We recommend packing light for the domestic flight while keeping essential items in your hand luggage.

We spend two full days exploring Kidepo’s wilderness, using flexible game drives to search for predators, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, and other wildlife across its vast valleys.

Kidepo deserves time.

Its size and remote character mean that we can explore different areas rather than concentrating our safari around one section of the park.

We begin our mornings early when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity can be rewarding.

Our game drives follow the conditions of the day.

We may track animal movements toward water sources or investigate fresh tracks left by predators and large mammals.

Kidepo’s broad landscapes also make distant wildlife easier to observe.

Depending on the season and recent sightings, we may encounter lion, buffalo, elephant, giraffe, zebra, Uganda kob, and other antelope species.

We also look for smaller wildlife and birds that contribute to the park’s wider ecosystem.

Full-day game drives allow us to travel farther into the wilderness. We can carry a picnic lunch and spend more time exploring rather than returning to the lodge at midday.

The pace remains flexible.

If wildlife activity is particularly interesting, we can stay longer in one area. If sightings are quiet, we continue exploring.

Walking opportunities around the lodge may also be possible, depending on local conditions, wildlife activity, and the arrangements available at your accommodation.

By the end of these two days, we have had time to experience Kidepo at a much deeper pace.

Our Tip

We encourage you to keep your schedule flexible in Kidepo. The best wildlife moments often come when we have time to follow fresh sightings rather than follow a rigid timetable.

We fly south from Kidepo toward Lake Mburo National Park, trading Kidepo’s dry northern landscapes for the greener hills, wetlands, and savannah of southwestern Uganda.

Today, we leave Kidepo and fly toward Lake Mburo National Park.

The aerial journey offers a fascinating view of Uganda’s changing geography.

Below us, the dry landscapes of the north gradually give way to greener countryside and cultivated areas.

After arriving near Lake Mburo, we transfer to our lodge and settle in.

The atmosphere here is different from Kidepo.

Lake Mburo is a compact park with a mixture of open grasslands, wetlands, woodland, and lake habitats.

In the afternoon, we head out for our first game drive.

We search for wildlife including zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, waterbuck, topi, and other antelope.

The smaller scale of the park allows us to explore at a comfortable pace.

We return to the lodge later in the day and enjoy a relaxed evening.

Our Tip

Keep a camera or binoculars nearby during transfers. Uganda’s countryside can reveal wildlife and birdlife even outside the national parks.

We experience Lake Mburo from a closer perspective through walking and horseback safari activities, complemented by the park’s open savannah and abundant antelope.

Lake Mburo offers experiences that are difficult to replicate in many other Ugandan parks.

Today, we explore the landscape away from the traditional safari vehicle.

A horseback safari allows us to move quietly through the grasslands and observe wildlife from ground level.

Zebra, impala, eland, buffalo, waterbuck, and other herbivores may be encountered along the route.

The slower pace gives us time to appreciate the smaller details of the ecosystem.

We may also explore on foot.

A walking safari changes the way we experience the bush. Instead of concentrating only on large mammals, we pay attention to animal tracks, plants, insects, birds, and sounds.

Walking routes and durations depend on the conditions and activities available at the time.

We can combine these experiences with a game drive where appropriate.

After the day’s activities, we return to the lodge for dinner and relaxation.

Our Tip

Wear comfortable closed shoes for walking activities. A hat, sunscreen, insect repellent, and drinking water are also useful.

We use our final day in Lake Mburo to explore more of the park through game drives, walking or horseback activities, and a nighttime safari experience where conditions permit.

Today gives us additional time to experience Lake Mburo without rushing.

We can begin with an early morning walk, when the park is cooler and wildlife begins moving across the grasslands.

Alternatively, we can explore on horseback or head out by safari vehicle.

Lake Mburo is particularly rewarding for travelers interested in antelope species.

We may encounter impala, zebra, eland, waterbuck, topi, reedbuck, oribi, and buffalo, while predators such as leopards and hyenas may also be present.

The park’s wetlands and papyrus areas provide important habitat for birds and other wildlife.

Later, we can experience a nighttime safari, subject to park regulations and availability.

After dark, the ecosystem changes.

Nocturnal animals become active while a spotlight can reveal wildlife that is difficult to observe during daylight hours.

The experience adds another dimension to our time in Lake Mburo.

We return to the lodge after the activity and enjoy our final evening in the park.

Our Tip

Night safaris follow strict safety procedures. Always remain inside the vehicle unless your guide confirms that a particular activity is permitted and safe.

We leave Lake Mburo and travel toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, passing through southwestern Uganda before reaching the misty mountain forests where gorillas live.

Today, we continue south toward Bwindi Impenetrable National Park.

The journey takes us through Uganda’s rural countryside, where red-earth roads, cultivated hills, villages, and forested mountains shape the landscape.

As we approach Bwindi, the scenery becomes increasingly green and mountainous.

The change is striking.

We leave behind Lake Mburo’s open savannah and enter a landscape dominated by dense vegetation and steep hills.

By the time we reach our lodge, Bwindi’s forest is already part of the experience.

Depending on the location of your accommodation, you may have views across the forested slopes and surrounding mountains.

We keep the afternoon relaxed.

Tomorrow is dedicated to one of Uganda’s most important wildlife experiences: mountain gorilla trekking.

Our team briefs you on the trek and helps you prepare your equipment.

You can then enjoy dinner and an early rest before the following morning’s adventure.

Our Tip

Prepare your trekking gear this evening. Waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking shoes, gardening gloves, and a small daypack are particularly useful in Bwindi.

We trek through Bwindi’s rainforest to find a habituated mountain gorilla family, then spend the permitted viewing time observing their behavior in their natural habitat.

Today is the emotional centerpiece of our safari.

After breakfast, we travel to the appropriate gorilla trekking trailhead for briefing.

Park officials explain the responsible viewing guidelines before we enter the forest.

Then we begin our trek.

Bwindi is a genuine rainforest environment.

The terrain can be steep, muddy, and uneven, and the trekking duration depends on where the assigned gorilla family is located.

Our guides and trackers lead us through the forest while searching for signs of the gorillas.

The anticipation builds with every step.

Once we locate the family, we slow down and observe.

We may see adults feeding, mothers caring for infants, juveniles playing, or the dominant silverback monitoring the group.

Every family behaves differently, so no two gorilla trekking experiences are exactly alike.

We follow the required viewing distance and all instructions from our guides and park authorities.

The permitted encounter gives us precious time to appreciate these endangered great apes without disrupting their natural behavior.

Afterwards, we hike back through the forest and return to the lodge.

The remainder of the day is reserved for rest.

Our Tip

Gorilla trekking requires physical effort. We recommend preparing with regular walking or hiking before your trip, especially if you are not accustomed to steep terrain.

We travel north toward Semuliki National Park, entering a distinct forest ecosystem influenced by the Congo Basin and known for its rich primate and birdlife.

After breakfast, we leave Bwindi and travel toward Semuliki National Park.

The journey reveals another side of Uganda.

As we travel north, the landscape gradually changes from the mountainous forests of southwestern Uganda toward the lower-lying forest environment of Semuliki.

Semuliki sits within the Albertine Rift and forms part of a wider ecosystem influenced by the Congo Basin.

This location contributes to its distinctive wildlife and plant communities.

After reaching the area, we settle into our accommodation.

Depending on arrival time, we begin a forest experience in search of primates and other wildlife.

We may encounter species such as red-tailed monkeys, black-and-white colobus monkeys, L’Hoest’s monkeys, mangabeys, and other forest species.

Birdwatchers can also find plenty to appreciate.

The forest atmosphere differs noticeably from Bwindi, making this another valuable addition to our Uganda safari.

We return to the lodge in the evening and prepare for tomorrow’s chimpanzee experience.

Our Tip

Semuliki is particularly appealing to travelers who enjoy less conventional safari experiences. Bring binoculars if birding and primate observation interest you.

We explore Semuliki’s forest in search of chimpanzees, observing their behavior and experiencing a forest environment that differs from Uganda’s better-known primate destinations.

Today, we return to the forest for a chimpanzee tracking experience.

We follow our guides into the forest while listening for chimpanzee calls and watching the surrounding vegetation for movement.

Semuliki provides a different setting from Kibale.

The forest’s location and ecological character create opportunities to observe wildlife within a distinct Congo Basin-influenced environment.

As we track the chimpanzees, we may encounter other primates and forest species along the way.

When we find the chimpanzee group, we observe their behavior from a respectful distance.

Chimpanzees communicate through calls, gestures, facial expressions, and body movements.

Watching these interactions gives us a deeper appreciation of their complex social lives.

We allow the experience to unfold naturally rather than rushing from one sighting to another.

After our forest experience, we return to the lodge.

This final wildlife day provides a quieter conclusion to a safari that has taken us from northern savannah to southern rainforest and into one of Uganda’s distinctive forest ecosystems.

We fly from the Semuliki region to Entebbe, where our representative assists with your transfer to the airport for your international departure.

After breakfast, we prepare for our flight back to Entebbe.

The flight provides a convenient end to an extensive safari through Uganda.

From above, we can appreciate how dramatically the landscapes have changed during our journey.

We have traveled from the dry, expansive wilderness of Kidepo to Lake Mburo’s savannah and wetlands, then into Bwindi’s mountain rainforest and Semuliki’s forest ecosystem.

On arrival in Entebbe, our representative assists with your onward airport transfer.

If your international flight departs later, we can arrange additional accommodation or activities in Entebbe.

Your safari ends at Entebbe International Airport.
